Local residents showed their respect for late Deng Xiaoping, the chief architect of the ongoing reform and opening drive, Friday during the Qingming Festival, the traditional tomb-visiting day for the Chinese people.
Memorial services were held in several places in the city, including Mount Lotus, on top of which stands a bronze statue of Deng, and Xianhu Botanic Garden, where the late leader planted a banyan tree 10 years ago.
Some people also put flowers in front of a huge portrait of Deng in the center of the city.
Two decades ago, this city in south China's Guangdong Province was made China's first special economic zone by the second- generation leadership of the Communist Party of China led by Deng Xiaoping.
Now, the city is one of the country's largest hi-tech manufacturers and exporters as well as a major financial center.
