15 Killed in Truck Accident in South China Province

Fifteen people were killed and 12 others injured in a traffic accident which took place early Thursday evening in Chaozhou City's Chao'an County in south China's Guangdong Province.

Fifteen people were killed and 12 others injured in a traffic accident which took place early Thursday evening in Chaozhou City's Chao'an County in south China's Guangdong Province.

The accident occurred when a truck carrying 27 people overturned at 6:30 p.m. while descending a Mount Fenghuang road.

Local police said the accident was caused by the breaking of the transmission shaft, which led to the truck careering 60 metersdownhill before disintegrating.

Of the passengers, 22 were tea growers and five were students who joined the tea growers for a sight-seeing trip. Police say regulations ban farm trucks from carrying passengers.

Leaders of Chaozhou City and Chao'an County governments immediately rushed to the scene to direct rescue work. Provincial Party Secretary and officials of provincial government departmentsalso instructed that the accident be looked into thoroughly and its aftermath dealt with properly.

At present, the injured are being treated in local hospitals.
