Wei Jianxing, chairman of the All- China Federation of Trade Unions (ACFTU), met in Beijing Thursday with the Trade Action Delegation of the World Confederation of Labor (WCL) headed by its president Michel Bovy.

Wei introduced to the guests China's political, economic and trade union conditions. He said that since the opening-up and reform drive and the development of a socialist market economy, China's working class has become stronger, and its economic, political and cultural rights and interests have been improved.

At the same time, he said, China's economic and labor relations have undergone profound changes. Trade unions have an increasingly heavier task readjusting labor relations and protecting workers' legal rights and interests.

He said that as the newly revised Trade Union Law clearly states that the legal obligation of a trade union is to protect workers' legal rights and interests, it provides a powerful incentive for trade unions to perform their duty.

Wei assured Bovy that the ACFTU is willing to develop friendly cooperative relations with the WCL and all other trade unions throughout the world adhering to the principle of "independence, equality, mutual respect and non-interference in each other's internal affairs", in order to contribute to the promotion of world peace and development.

Michel Bovy said that the WCL is happy to see the continued development of friendly relations between the WCL and the ACFTU, and is willing to develop cooperation and encourage exchanges between the two sides.
