Li Praises Japanese Friendly Groups for Enhancing Sino-Japanese Ties

China's top legislator Li Peng expressed hope Thursday that all Japanese non-governmental friendly groups will continue their efforts for enhancing mutual understanding and trust between the Chinese and Japanese people.

Li, who is on a week-long visit to Japan, met with representatives from seven friendly groups devoted to the development of friendship between Japan and China. They hosted a luncheon for Li and his party.

Li said that his visit came on the 30th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic ties between China and Japan. The development of bilateral ties during the past 30 years deserved to be cherished by all people, for such friendly relationship was a result of arduous efforts made by many people from the two countries, Li said.

As two major nations in East Asia, China and Japan should take the opportunity of the anniversary for further enhancing mutual understanding and trust of the two peoples, he said.

Li spoked highly of the efforts made by these friendly groups to the growth of bilateral ties, in particular during the hard times in the Sino-Japanese relations. He expressed gratitude to all the people who have engaged in the restoration and development of Sino-Japanese ties.

Friendly groups from the two countries signed a declaration for the non-governmental friendship between China and Japan. Leaders of the friendly groups present at the luncheon said they would consistently make efforts to ensure that the Japanese-Chinese friendship will be passed on to generations to come.
