Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said in Beijing Wednesday that he hopes people with insight in the United States and China will help maintain the healthy development of China-U.S. relations and safeguard the fundamental interests of people in both countries.

Zhu made the remarks during a meeting with Dianne Feinstein, a senator from California, who is on a visit to China.

Zhu said the Taiwan issue is at the core of China-U.S. relations and is the most important and sensitive issue. Settlement of the issue and reunification of China will serve the interests of people across the Taiwan Straits, and will also benefit the United States, Zhu said.

"We hope that China-U.S. friendly relations develop smoothly," Zhu said. "But things do not always go smoothly. The development of China-U.S. relations gained momentum after President Bush's visit to China. However the later actions of the U.S. which were related to Taiwan were against the principles of the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques and harmed bilateral relations."

Feinstein said she understands the importance and sensitivity of the Taiwan issue, and she supports the one-China policy and thethree joint communiques.

Feinstein said she found China has made immense positive changes over the years and its entry into the World Trade Organization will bring both opportunities and challenges.

She said she and many other members of the U.S. Congress are willing to help China meet the challenges.
