Chinese President Jiang Zemin Wednesday urged the U.S. to adhere to the one-China policy and thecommitment made in the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques.
At a meeting with Dianne Feinstein, U.S. senator from California, he said Sino-U.S. relations have kept the development momentum on the whole despite ups and downs over the past 30 years.
China and the U.S. enjoy wide common interests, although differences do exist, he added.
Jiang recalled the visit by U.S. President George W. Bush this February, saying that he had held a good meeting with Bush and that they had reached a consensus on enriching the constructive and cooperative relations between the two countries.
Feinstein expressed gratitude for China's support for the U.S. on anti-terrorism.
She said that China has made remarkable achievements in its reform and opening-up drive, but some Americans still have little understanding of China, and therefore enhancing contacts and cooperation is important.
She expressed willingness to continue to push forward U.S.-China relations which she describes as being among the most important bilateral relations in the world.
