Top Seed China's Xia Advances at Japan Open Badminton

Top seed Xia Xuanze of China edged Japan's Kazuhiro Shimogami Wednesday in the second round of the Yonex Japan Open Badminton Championships.

Top seed Xia Xuanze of China edged Japan's Kazuhiro Shimogami Wednesday in the second round of the Yonex Japan Open Badminton Championships.

Xia, the favorite to win the men's singles title, eliminated Shimogami 7-3, 7-2, 7-4 at Yoyogi National Sports Complex to enter Thursday's third round, where he'll clash with defending champion Roslin Hashim of Malaysia.

Hashim beat South Korea's Park Tae-sung 7-4, 6-9, 1-7, 7-2,7-3 to move into the next round.

A total of 240 players from 20 countries and regions, including China, Denmark, England, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia,Singapore, the United States, Hong Kong of China and Chinese Taipei, are participating in the seven-day competition.

In Wednesday's men's doubles, Li Kwok-wa and Albertus Koon of China's Hong Kong downed Japan's Toru Matsumoto and Takanori Aoki in straight sets 7-1, 7-1, 7-1.

World No. 1 and defending champion Candra Wijaya and Sigit Budiarto of Indonesia had a bye in the second round and will take on Li and Koon in the quarter-finals .

In women's doubles, top seeds Gao Ling and Huang Sui of China outclassed Ran Kyung-min and Hwang Yu-mi of South Korea 7-0, 5-7, 7-4, 5-7, 7-1.

In mixed doubles, Tesana Panvisvas and Kulchala Worawichitchaikul of Thailand defeated Japan's Miyuki Tai and Takuya Takehana 8-6, 8-6, 1-7, 5-7, 7-5.

The women's singles begins Thursday. World No. 1 and defending champion Zhou Mi of China is the top seed.

World No. 2 and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Camilla Martin of Denmark withdrew from the tournament because of an injury to her right heel.
