Li Peng Meets Japan's FM

China's top legislator Li Peng met Wednesday with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi and they exchanged views on bilateral ties and issues of common concern.

China's top legislator Li Peng met Wednesday with Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi and they exchanged views on bilateral ties and issues of common concern.

Bilateral relationship between China and Japan have been advancing over the past three decades since the normalization of diplomatic relations between China and Japan 30 years ago, said LiPeng, chairman of China's National People's Congress (NPC) Standing Committee.

The main purpose of his visit, which comes at the 30th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries, is to discuss with Japanese leaders the developmentof bilateral ties in the new century, Li said.

The two sides should treasure the development of bilateral ties,which doesn't easily come by, he noted.

Both countries should prudently deal with the problems existingin the bilateral relationship with the consideration of overall Sino-Japanese ties and toward the future, Li said.

China attaches importance to the relationship with Japan, a close neighbor of China, Li noted, adding that China pursues an independent foreign policy of peace and its economic construction also needs a peaceful international environment.

The Chinese Cultural Year in Japan and the Japanese Cultural Year in China, the major cultural events to commemorate the 30th anniversary of normalization of diplomatic relationship between the two countries, have been unveiled, Li said.

He hoped that China and Japan continue to cooperate closely to ensure the success of the cultural events to enhance the friendship between the two peoples.

Kawaguchi agreed with Li Peng's views over the development of Sino-Japanese relationship.

The friendly relationship between China and Japan is beneficialnot only to the two countries but also to the peace and prosperityof the world, she said.

China's admission into the World Trade Organization will be conducive to China's economic development as a whole, she said, adding that it is also beneficial to the bilateral cooperation over economy and trade between China and Japan.

Kawaguchi expressed her wish to visit China at an appropriate time, and Li expressed his welcome.

Li on Wednesday also met with Yamasaki Taku, General Secretary of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).

Li arrived at Japan on Tuesday for a week-long official goodwill visit.
