Background: Incidents in China's 9-year-old Pro Soccer League

Following are the major incidents which have place in China's nine-year-old professional soccer league competitions inaugurated in 1994:

On April 15-16, 1995, spectators threw water bottles and other debris onto the fields during first-round league matches in such first and second division competition districts as Guangzhou, Xi' an and Changsha. Organizers of the three districts were criticized in a public notice by the Chinese Football Association (CFA) in a public notice.

During a first division league match between home team Jinan Taishan and visiting team Bayi on May 21, 1995, in Jinan, ShandongProvince, spectators threw water bottles and bricks in attempts tohit the referees and visitors. The home club of Jinan Taishan wascriticized in a public notice and fined 5,000 yuan RMB (120 US dollars) by CFA's Disciplinary Committee.

During a CFA Cup match between home side Jinan Taishan and visiting team Beijing Guo'an on July 30, 1995, spectators threw water bottles onto the field, which interrupted the entrance and exit by the visitors. Organizers of the Jinan competition district were warned, fined 10,000 yuan (1,205 US dollars) and ordered to straighten things up in a period of time set by CFA's Disciplinary Committee.

During a second division league match between home team Hunan Laifu and visiting Locomotive team on October 14, 1995, some spectators rushed onto the field in an attempt to attack the referee, and players of the visiting team making their exit from the field, were hit by articles thrown in by spectators. The homeclub Laifu was fined 10,000 yuan and two home matches scheduled tofollow were banned to be held at the venue, by CFA's Disciplinary Committee.

During a second division league match between home side Henan Jianye and a visiting team from Foshan, Guangdong Province, in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, on June 22, 1996, spectators threw water bottles onto the field repeatedly and some burned waste paper on the stands. The organizers of the competition district were warned and fined 5,000 yuan by CFA's Disciplinary Committee.

During a first division match between home team Shanghai Shenhua and visitors Beijing Guo'an on June 23, 1996, a spectator climbed over the fence and ran onto the field to push down a Beijing player. And after the game, spectators threw water bottles onto the field and torched seats by setting a fire on waster paper on the stands. Organizers of the Shanghai competition district were warned and fined 5,000 yuan (120 dollars)by CFA's Disciplinary Committee.

When a second division league match between home team Jiangsu Jiajia and visitors Sha'anxi Guoli was staged on April 4, 1998, inNanjing, Jiangsu Province, spectators repeatedly attacked the visitors with water bottles. Organizers of the Nanjing district were criticized in a public notice, fined 10,000 yuan RMB and ordered to straighten things up in a period of time set by CFA's Disciplinary Committee.

A second division league match between home team Sha'anxi Guoliand visitors Jiangsu Jiajia on August 8, 1998 was twice interrupted as some spectators tried to hit visitors with water bottles and bricks. Organizers of the Xi'an competition district were given a severe warn in a public notice, fined 30,000 yuan (3,614 dollars) and ordered to straighten things up in a period of time set by CFA's Disciplinary Committee.

Competition was repeatedly interrupted during a first division league match in Xinxiang, Henan Province on April 25, 1999, by water bottles and stones thrown from spectators' stands. The organizers of the Xinxiang competition district were criticized ina public notice and fined 10,000 yuan.

Competition was severely interrupted by large sum of water bottles and other debris from spectator stands during a first division league match in Xi'an and a second division league game in Yan'an, both of Sha'anxi Province, on August 14 and 15, 1999. The two competition districts were handed down a severe warn and afine of 100,000 yuan each by CFA's Disciplinary Committee.

Some over 10,000 home fans gathered outside the stadium after asecond division match between home team Sha'anxi Bohua Guoli and visitors Chengdu Wuniu Guoteng on July 15, 2000, and some home fans rioted on the city's main streets. The competition district was later stripped temporarily the right to stage home matches of the Sha'anxi team, due to the organizers' lack of efforts to stop the riot, and they were fined 100,000 yuan.

After a first division league match between home team Shenyang Sea Lions and the visiting team Shanghai Shenhua on August 6, 2000,Shenyang fans shattered the windows of the Shanghai team's bus with stones. The Shenyang competition district was handed down a warn by CFA's Disciplinary Committee, for local fans' behavior.
