China Pledges Support to Philippine Agricultural Modernization

China will continue its support for the efforts of the Philippine government to modernize the country's agriculture sector, a senior Chinese official said Tuesday in Manila.

China will continue its support for the efforts of the Philippine government to modernize the country's agriculture sector, a senior Chinese official said Tuesday in Manila.

Song Jian, Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, made the pledge during a courtesy call on Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

China also willing to cooperate with Philippine in other fields
Song, who is also President of Chinese Academy of Engineering, said China is also willing to further strengthen cooperation with the Philippines in the areas of information and communications technology and entrepreneurship and in other fields.

Song expressed the hope that with the common efforts made by the two countries, a lasting, compressive and healthy Chinese-Philippine relationship would be realized as proposed by PresidentArroyo during her visit to China last year.

He also mentioned the Chinese government-funded China-Philippines Agricultural Technology Center now under construction in the northern Philippines, saying China will send outstanding experts and technicians to make the project a success.

President Arroyo meanwhile noted that China's high-yield hybridrice is now in the country for the initial transplanting on 50,000hectares, hoping the hybrid rice would contribute to agricultural productivity in the country.

Arroyo expressed gratitude to China for assistance
She expressed gratitude to China for its assistance and supportto her country, including the provision of farm equipment, and hoped that the two countries could further develop the service side of the agriculture sector.

During the call, Song gave President Arroyo 55 sets of agricultural pumps as a token for her upcoming 55th birthday.

  • On 9 June 1975, the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations with the Republic of the Philippines. The relations between the two countries have developed steadily in general. There's a constant exchange of visits of high-level leaders and there're mechanisms of dialogues and cooperation at different levels between the two governments. The diplomatic consultation mechanism was started in 1986 and 11 rounds of consultations have been held thus far. For 21 times since 1977, China and the Philippines hosts in turn in Beijing or Manila every year the meeting of Joint Trade Committee at the Director-General level, and to sign the annual trade protocol on the importation and exportation of commodity and make arrangements for the major imports and exports of every year.
