Taiwan Laptop Output to Grow 20 Pct in 2002

Annual output of Taiwan-made notebook computers will grow 20 percent in 2002 to reach 17 million units, making the island number one supplier for laptops, according to news reaching here from Taiwan Tuesday.

Annual output of Taiwan-made notebook computers will grow 20 percent in 2002 to reach 17 million units, making the island number one supplier for laptops, according to news reaching here from Taiwan Tuesday.

It was also estimated by the Institute for Information Industry(III), a leading market research organization for the information technology industry in Taiwan, that notebook manufacturers will move their production bases to Chinese mainland at a faster rate.

It said the number of laptops made by Taiwan manufacturers on the mainland will grow 30 to 50 percent this year and 60 to 70 percent next year.

Taiwan notebook computer makers are facing pressure from Koreanmanufacturers, which are producing at a lower cost. To lower costsand better compete with other manufacturers, Taiwan notebook makers are increasingly moving their production bases to Chinese mainland.
