Chief of the Presidential Security Division, which provides protection to Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga, and Superintendent of Police Nihal Karunaratne was arrested by police Tuesday over conspiracy chargesto assassinate a government minister.

The arrest followed a warrant issued by Pradeep Rajapakse, the Additional Magistrate in the central city of Kandy, some 120 kilometers northeast of capital Colombo. Karunaratne was arrested at a Colombo private hospital for conspiring to assassinate Minister of Agriculture S.B. Dissanayake, police said.

The Criminal Investigation Department carried out an investigation on the assassination plot of Dissanayake in the run-up to the country's last parliamentary election held in December 5.

Dissanayake, once a key figure in Kumaratunga's People's Alliance (PA) government, defected to the then main opposition United National Party (UNP) in mid October last year. His defection along with several others in the government forced Kumaratunga to dissolve the Parliament and called for parliamentary elections at which PA was defeated by UNP.
