A new bridge is expected to be built over the Yalu River, which forms part of the border between China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), according to official sources.

Deputies to the National People's Congress of China put forward proposals for building the bridge over the past two years, but agreement by the DPRK side came only recently, the sources said.

There used to be three bridges over the river, but two of them were destroyed by American warplanes during the War to Resist U.S. Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53).

The only bridge now in service on the river was built in 1943, as a railway bridge and later turned into a highway-railway bridge.

The two countries will soon start to jointly choose the site for the new bridge, the sources said.
