China Improves Red Tide Monitoring, Forecasting

China has made substantial improvements to monitor and forecast red tides along its coast. Last year, 77 red tides occurred and caused economic losses of one billion yuan, or about 120 million U.S. dollars.

Now the State Oceanic Administration has organized and informed coastal provinces to be prepared for the disaster.

In eastern China's Zhejiang Province, losses from red tides were reduced to a mininum due to the regulations and a leading group's efforts.

Meanwhile in Fujian province, early warnings, timely data circulation and preventive measures have saved 30 million yuan or about four million US dollars since last June.
