A major construction project on navigation route improvement of the Mekong River, backed by Chinese engineers, started Saturday at the river's section in Laos.

The improvement will be carried out on 331-kilometer long navigation route at the river, which runs through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam, for a total distance of 4, 661 km. Its 2,160-km section upstream in China is known as the Lancang River, which traverses southwest China's Yunnan Province for more than 1,000 kilometers.

Some 146 experienced Chinese engineers will participate in the design, management and construction of the project from today to low-water season in 2003.

More than 20 sites of dangerous shoals and submerged rocks will be eliminated. Meanwhile, navigation marks and facilities will be installed in more than 200 sites at the river.

The project will involve a total investment of US$5 million. After completion, the river will be capable for navigation of 100-tonner vessels.

China to Spend US$5 Million in Dredging Mekong River
China will spend five million U.S. dollars in dredging a navigation section of the Mekong River, a project that also involves Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, said sources with the Yunnan Provincial Navigation Administration Friday.

The 331-kilometer section runs from No. 243 demarcation stone between China and Myanmar to Kouaxay in Laos. The project will begin in mid-February and is expected to be completed before the rainy season next year. In detail
