Sino-US relations through twists and turns

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji said Wednesday that the growth of Sino-U.S. relations should be mutually beneficial and stability and development of bilateral relations could only come by observing the three Sino-U.S. joint communiques.

Zhu made the remarks in a meeting with Adam Smith, a member of U.S. House of Representatives.

Zhu said that Sino-U.S. relations had been through twists and turns during the last three decades, but "in general keep going forward".

It was the common policy adopted by both Democratic and Republican parties to develop ties with China and there were no differences or disputes that could not be resolved through negotiations, Zhu said.

Taiwan: important and sensitive issue

Zhu reiterated that the Taiwan issue is the most important and sensitive issue of Sino-U.S. relations. He urged the U.S. to honor its commitments on the one China policy and to beware of sending wrong signals to forces seeking the independence of Taiwan. "China's peaceful unification is conducive to all parties," Zhu said.

On bilateral trade relations, Zhu said that China and the United States are compatible in economic and trade areas and governmental departments should support such dual-track and mutually beneficial cooperation.

China: cooperative partner of US

Smith described U.S.-China relations as one of the most important bilateral relations in the world. The growth of U.S.-China relations is also conducive to stability in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large, he said.

China is a cooperative partner of the United States, he said, adding that advancing bilateral ties is a major task for him as congressman.

He admitted that the U.S. people benefited from trade with China and said that the U.S. should lift certain artificial barriers for exports to China.
