China at first stage of modernization

Scientists who take part in the "Research on China's Modernization Strategy", under the auspices of the Ministry of Technology and Science, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and China National Natural Science Foundation, announced lately that China has been at first stage of its modernization and heading fast on the second.

Modernization is a dream of several generations of the Chinese people. According to China's "three-step" development strategy, world medium level marking developed countries is expected and the country's modernization will basically come true by 2050.

China heading fast towards second stage

Modernization is a long-term target as well as an academic research topic of pragmatic significance. Chinese academics proposed "The second-wave modernization theory" in 1990s, noting two stages in the world modernization process since 1700s. The first-wave features developing industrial economy and the second, developing information economy. Also, each stage consists of initial, developing, mature and transitional periods.

Relying on a wealth of confirmed figures and quota systems, Wang Yumin, He Chuanqi and others known for their authoritative study into and evaluation on the modernization process of 131 countries in 1960-99 and that of China's in 1970-2000, have raised their strategic views and suggestions in promoting China's modernization.

China currently belongs to initially developed countries

A view held by scientists is that 61 countries had realized or were about to realize the first -wave modernization by 1999 and 24 countries have entered the stage of second-wave modernization. The top 10 countries are US, Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Germany and Holland. The second-wave modernization was noted on the rise 1970-1999.

As was put by the research, in 1999 there were 15 developed countries, 31 medium developed, 29 initially developed and 51 underdeveloped. China belongs to the category initially developed.
