China to Step up Rectifying Economic Order

The State Council, China's cabinet, held a national tele-conference Thursday to call on intensified effort to rectify economic order.

Work in This Area Satisfactory: Li Lanqing

Vice Premier Li Lanqing, who presided over the conference, expressed his satisfaction with last year's work in this area.

He said that major economic cases had been dealt with and rampant economic crimes had been curbed. The public's confidence in market economic order had been improved in 2001, he said.

More Effective Measures Should Be Taken

When blueprinting this year's task, he said that more effective measures should be taken. He said that this job is a long-term one and endeavor should be made continuously and consistently.

Meanwhile, he urged that related laws and regulations should be enacted and amended to adapt to the new economic situation. "The rule of law will ensure a market order of credit and fair competition," he said.

Wu Yi on Tax Evasion in Bazaars and Gas Stations

State Councilor Wu Yi presented the work report on rectifying economic order in 2001 at Thursday's conference.

She also talked on issues of bazaars and gas stations. The two sectors have been found of frequent tax evasion, she said.

The State Council has decided to deal with these two thorny problems in the first half of this year, said Wu, adding that chain retail and E-commerce will be encouraged.



China to Continue to Improve Market, Economic Order: Vice-Premier
Chinese Vice-Premier Li Lanqing said on January 24 China will continue its efforts to rectify and regulate the market and economic order this year, targeting at fake and substandard goods and their producers, smuggling, tax evasion and other economic crimes.

Achievements in 2001
It is learned that last year China shut down half a million workshops producing fake products. The law enforcement departments handled 1.2 million cases of fake products, involving two billion U.S. dollars-worth of goods.

They also confiscated 158 million illegal publications and 4.2 million copies of pirated software.
