Li Peng Winds Up Visit to Macao SAR
After his two-day visit to the Macao Special Administrative Region (SAR), Li Peng, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), left here Sunday afternoon for Zhuhai, a port city in neighboring Guangdong Province.

During his first stay in the Macao SAR, Li, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), said that he was satisfied with the special administrative regional government's practice in "One Country, Two Systems", "Macao people administering Macao" and of the high degree of autonomy of the Macao SAR.

Li highly valued the work done by the Macao SAR government led by Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah.

On Saturday evening, Li met with senior SAR governmental, legislative and judicial officials.

When attending the banquet hosted by Ho, Li said that since China resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Macao in December 20, 1999, the Macao SAR government has attained great achievements.

The social security here has been greatly improved. While keeping social stability, the SAR government made efforts to stimulate local economy.

"The central government is satisfied with the work of the SAR government," Li said.

The practice in the past two years showed that Macao People can administer Macao well, Li said.

Li said that the central government would, as always, support further development in the Macao SAR.

Ho welcomed Li and his wife's visit to the Macao SAR at the banquet. Ho said that after Macao's return to the motherland, the SAR government administered Macao strictly in accordance with the

Basic Law of the Macao SAR.

Against the backdrop of the global economic sluggishness, Macao realized economic growth in the successive two years, Ho said. In 2002, the SAR government should further bring Macao's advantages into play, so as to spur economic growth.

On Sunday morning, Li met with NPC deputies, members of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) from the Macao SAR and personages of the local society. He also met with senior officials of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, the Office of Commissioner of Foreign Ministry, the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Garrison Troops, and Chinese-funded units.

At meetings with those officials, Li said that the practice of "One Country, Two Systems" in Macao is successful. Li said that the Central Government supports the social and economic program outlined by the Macao SAR government, which is suitable to local conditions.

He said he believes that with joint efforts from the Macao SAR government and various social circles, Macao will surely have a brighter future.

Li said that officials dispatched from the central government to the Macao SAR must abide by the Basic Law and other laws in the Macao SAR and actively support the Macao SAR government led by Chief Executive Ho.

Li also briefed those present on the economic and social situation in the Chinese interior areas.

Li and his party also visited local well-known spots including Macao Tower, House Museum, Ruins of St. Paul's, Macao Museum and Our Lady of the Mount Fortress.

Li and his entourage, including his wife Zhu Lin, Director Liao Hui of the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, Deputy Secretary-General Lu Congmin of the NPC Standing Committee and Director of Li's Office Wu Wenchang, were seen off by Macao SAR Chief Executive Edmund Ho Hau Wah and his wife Tatiana Lau, Vice-Chairman Ma Man Kei of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Director Bai Zhijian of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Macao SAR, President Susana Chou of the Legislative Council, President Sam Hou Fai of Court of Final Appeal and Secretary Florinda Da Rosa Silva Chan for Administration and Justice of the Macao SAR government, and other SAR governmental officials.

Among those who also saw Li off at the hotel were Special Commissioner Yuan Tao of Foreign Ministry in the Macao SAR and Commander Liu Yuejun of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA) Garrison Troops in the Macao SAR.
