Death Toll Reaches 42 in Turkish Earthquake

The death toll rose to 42 in the strong earthquake hitting the southwest Turkish province of Afyon on Monday, reported the Anatolia News Agency.

The death toll rose to 42 in the strong earthquake hitting the southwest Turkish province of Afyon on Monday, reported the Anatolia News Agency.

Deputy Governor of Afyon province Halil Turkoglu told the agency that the number of injured had climbed to over 150, adding that most of the injured were immediately treated.

He said that the number of buildings which collapsed in the earthquake had exceeded 150.

"The trucks of aid sent by the Turkish Red Crescent have arrived in Sultandagi. Some of the citizens have started to return to their houses in Afyon while there are some people still waiting outside,"said Turkoglu.

"We guess that Red Crescent's tents will reach the region this evening. We are trying to distribute hot meal to the citizens. We hope that we will be better organized and distribute the aid more efficiently as of tomorrow morning," he added.

Meanwhile, the citizens in Sultandagi, Bolvadin, Cay and Cobanlar townships were calling on the government to provide them with emergency needs like tents and blankets.

The earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude on Richter scale took place in Afyon province at 9:11 a.m. (0711 GMT) and a 5.3-magnitude aftershock followed more than two hours later.
