First Snow in Kabul in Four Years
A heavy snowstorm shut down Kabul airport Friday, delaying the arrival of an Italian C-130 military aircraft carrying troops and supplies until the weather improves, military sources in Rome said.

The Italian aircraft was carrying about 20 soldiers and supplies, the sources said. United Nations officials, in charge of running a big humanitarian relief operation in Afghanistan, were also forced to cancel flights from neighboring Pakistan because of the weather.

The World Food Program said the bad weather would probably affect its distribution of humanitarian supplies.

Kabul airport officially re-opened on January 16, exactly 102 days after it was targeted by U.S. warplanes and bombed out of business.

The 350-strong Italian contingent in Afghanistan includes a company protecting the ISAF international security force command.

There is also a company of army engineers and a company trained to combat biological, radiological and chemical weapons as well as liaison and operational staff.
