Twenty four rugby teams confirmed their participation in the Hong Kong Sevens slated for March 22-24, local organizers told a press conference on Tuesday.

Argentina, Australia, Canada, China, Chinese Taipei, England, Fiji, France, Hong Kong of China, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Morocco, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Portugal, Russia, Samoa, Scotland, Singapore, South Africa, Sri Lanka, U.S.A., Wales have make their commitment to the Hong Kong Sevens.

The official draw for the 2002 Hong Kong Sevens, the seventh ofeleven tournaments in this year's World Sevens Series (WSS), will be held on February 26 here.

Acknowledged as the International Rugby Board's "Jewel in the Crown" of the WSS, the Hong Kong Sevens remains the only WSS 24-team tournament on the World Series circuit.

As such, the Hong Kong Sevens offers elevated series points forthe winners, with Cup winners receiving 30 championship points as opposed to the 20 customary in the WSS other 16-team events.

This year's Hong Kong Sevens will provide an important test forthose teams confirmed to participate in the rugby sevens competition at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, England.

After being introduced at the last Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur in 1998, the rugby sevens competition has risen to become amarquee event for future games. With 12 of 24 teams participating in this year's Sevens from Commonwealth countries, Hong Kong will provide a first glimpse of the leading contenders for Commonwealthglory, said the organizers.
