Sri Lanka is to decide on a 10- member Constitutional Council Thursday at a special meeting Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will hold with representatives of political parties in Parliament, The Island newspaper said.

The Constitutional Council will appoint independent commissions to run the elections office, public services, judicial service and the police department as pledged by the ruling United Front government during the last election campaign.

The Constitutional Council was founded under the 17th amendment to the constitution under the previous People's Alliance government of President Chandrika Kumaratunga and the only one member legal luminary S.S. Wijeratne has been appointed to it so far on a unanimous decision by all parties.

The president, prime minister, leader of the opposition and parliament speaker are ex officio members of the council. Minority political parties will nominate three members and the prime minister and leader of the opposition will nominate the other two members.
