Zhu Rongji Meets Duma Chairman
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji met Tuesday with Gennady Seleznev, chairman of the Russian State Duma. The two leaders exchanged views on such issues as bilateral ties and trade and economic cooperation.

Zhu says it is China's strategic decision to develop a strategic partnership of cooperation with Russia on the basis of equality and trust.

In the Sino-Russian good-neighborly treaty of friendship and cooperation signed by President Jiang Zemin and President Vladimir Putin, the peace ideology of "eternal friendship and non-enmity" is established in the form of the Law, which is the soul of the Sino-Russian relations in the new century, Zhu says.

He says he was delighted to see that both parliaments and people from all walks of life in both countries regard the treaty highly, adding the treaty is not only in the common interest of the two peoples but will also contribute significantly to world peace and development.

Zhu has a positive attitude about the further development of the Sino-Russian strategic partnership of cooperation, and told the guests the China is willing to take measures to further trade and economic cooperation with Russia.

Zhu said being complementary in their economies, China and Russia have an enormous potential for further cooperation.

He said while meeting with Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mikhailovich Kasyanov during his Russian tour last September, they reached broad consensus on implementing the treaty and further promoting bilateral cooperation in all spheres.

Zhu was impressed by Russia's recent economic progress and its future potential. He said China pays high attention to the Russian market, and hoped Russia will further participate in China's economic construction, particularly in the country's western development.

He also briefed the guests on China's accession to the World Trade Organization.

In his speech during the meeting, Seleznev values the significant development of Russia-China bilateral relations over the past year.

He said the past few years have seen frequent high-level visits, fruitful regular meetings of heads of governments, record-high trade volumes, and smooth development of key cooperative projects.

He believes that the trade and economic ties between the two countries will embark onto a new phase.
