Two Billion Opportunities for Food Companies
- China's Food Industry
As the world's most populous country, China is both a major producer and consumer of food and food ingredients. However, China is still a developing country, and there is a large gap between its demand for food-related products and its ability to satisfy this demand. This condition is being exacerbated by the country's high growth rates and the accompanying gains in living standards. Demand for imported finished food products is on the rise as well, increasingly with a Western flavor. Literally and figuratively, China hungers for products as well as new, advanced food technologies. Many opportunities exist for international trade and foreign investment. With the encouragement of the Chinese government, food and food ingredient manufacturers are receptive to direct investment, strategic alliances, joint ventures, technology transfer, or the direct purchase of food and advanced ingredients. China is also seeking to modernize its food plants, and opportunities exist for manufacturers of food production equipment.
