The Canadian government is to work out a five-year plan for assistance to China during the 2002-2006 period, according to the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

CIDA sources say the five-year plan will focus on providing aid for environmental protection, ecological development, anti-povertymeasures, the building of legal systems, skills training and other undertakings in west China.

Study group conducted a three-day inspection tour

  • The CIDA and the Canadian Embassy in Beijing have recently sent a study group to west China's Guizhou Province and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region.

  • During the three-day tour, the group mainly studied areas like the implementation of China's strategy to develop the western regions, economic development, environmental protection, government administration, and the building of legal systems.

  • Hau Sing Tse, vice president of the Asia Branch with the CIDA, said that Canada is considering further cooperation with China to gradually help some areas in China out of poverty .

  • Tse said that the study tour is aimed at obtaining a general knowledge of west China prior to drafting a detailed aid plan.

  • Tse said that they will also discuss with Chinese government departments like the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation on the plan.

Over the last five years the CIDA provided 12.98 million Canadian dollars for a women's development program and an environmental protection project in Xinjiang.
