Three million Chinese students organized a range of activities Monday meant to clean up antisocial behavior on the Internet, such as defaming others unde rfalse names, and the use of pornography .

The students were from 100 colleges of higher learning and 2,000 primary and middle schools across the country.

The activities, with the theme "abiding by civilized net pact and striving to be civilized net pioneers" included debates, online discussions and seminars, and were organized to publicize the "China National Civilized Net Pact for Youngsters".

For instance, young pioneers, teachers and some parents of students with the primary school attached to the prestigious Beijing University surfed the net together with Dong Hao, an anchorman with the China Central Television Station who is the special promoter of the pact.

More Efforts to Rectify Cultural Market
China will make more efforts to rectify its cultural market, said Vice Premier Li Lanqing at a tele-conference held in Beijing in last August.

Li called for the weeding out of decadent behavior in the cultural market for the development of China's advanced culture and healthy growth of young people.

China plans to rectify order in the Internet cafes and bars, commercial playrooms offering computer games, entertainment places, markets selling audio-visual products, markets selling publications and computer software, and the publishing trade during the second half of this year.

Internet Users in China
There were only 620,000 Internet users in China in October 1997 and as of the end of June, China had 26.5 million Internet users, which is expected to spiral to 26.5 million by the end of June 2001.

It is estimated that by the year 2005, the number of computers connected to the Internet will reach 40 million and Internet users will total 200 million.

In terms of the information gathered by users on the Internet, 63.5 per cent is news, and 31.4 per cent is information on science and technology as well as education.

The proportion of female and older people is now increasing, but the number of highly educated people is down, which indicates that the Internet is now coming closer to common residents. Statistics show that 38. 7 percent of the Internet users are female.
