At least four policemen and 12 ultra-leftist guerrillas members were killed early Tuesday morning in a cross-fire in Darchula district of far western Nepal, according to reports reaching Kathmandu Wednesday.

Around 40 policemen were on a regular patrol from Latinath areapolice station when the rebels attacked them, The Kathmandu Post, an independent English daily, quoted Deputy Superintendent of Police Bikram Bahadur Chand as saying.

Six policemen sustained injuries and six more are still missing,Chand said, adding that casualties on the guerrillas side could not be confirmed independently.

This is the first report of major encounter between police and the guerrillas since the Nepali government imposed the state of emergency Monday night in order to contain the terrorist activities by the guerrillas.

There were sporadic cases of violence by the guerrillas in manyplaces across the country after the imposition of the emergency, but no major casualties had been reported, the daily said.

More than 300 people, including policemen, army soldiers, civilians and guerrillas, have been killed since Friday night when the guerrillas broke the four-month-long ceasefire with the government and launched well-coordinated massive attacks at policeacross the country.

The government initiated peace talks with the guerrillas in August this year in order to find a peaceful solution to the six-year-long guerrillas insurgency that has claimed more than 2,000 lives, including policemen, guerrillas members and civilians, since it began in the Himalayan kingdom in 1996.

However, the three rounds of talks held since August were inconclusive as the guerrillas demanded the establishment of a republican state, an interim government and a new constitution, which were all rejected by the government.
