Britain said on Tuesday it did not support expanding the United States-led military campaign beyond Afghanistan without evidence of state involvement in the hijacked airliner attacks in the United States.

"This is a military campaign specifically directed against those responsible for the mass murders of September 11," foreign office minister Ben Bradshaw told parliament.

"There is no evidence of any state involvement and in the absence of such evidence those military objectives remain as they have done all along," he said while speaking to the House of Commons.

The foreign office minister, who is in charge of Asian affairs, was responding to questions about U.S. President George W. Bush's demand on Monday that Iraq let United Nations inspectors back to determine whether it is building weapons of mass destruction.

"I don't think it's helpful to speculate about the possible expansion of the current military campaign," Bradshaw said.

"The (British) government has always made absolutely clear that this campaign is targeted, it is specific. It is about bringing to justice those who were responsible for the mass murder of September 11," he stressed.
