U.S. special envoys to the Middle East retired general Anthony Zinni and Assistant Secretary of State William Burns arrived in Israel on Monday to launch new mediation campaign between Israel and the Palestinians.

Zinni and Burns are scheduled to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and Foreign Minister Shimon Peres on Tuesday. They will also chair a meeting between Israeli and Palestinian officials.

Sharon named counter-terrorism expert Meir Dagan as head the Israeli delegation to hold talks with the U.S. envoys Monday morning, stressing that the delegation should include security experts and focus on security issues.

Sharon also decided to set up a three-member steering committee including himself, Peres and Defense Minister Binyamin Ben Eliezer to oversee the Dagan-led delegation in the future talks.
