Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji Declares Close National Games

Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji declared close the 9th Chinese National Games at the closing ceremony held in the Guangzhou Gymnasium Sunday evening. Chinese sports chief Yuan Weimin called on nationwide efforts to further implement the "Sports for All" National Fitness Program and the "All for Olympic Glory" Program for greater sporting achievements.

Ninth National Games Closed in Guangdong
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji declared close the 9th Chinese National Games at the closing ceremony held in the Guangzhou Gymnasium Sunday evening.

When addressing the ceremony, Yuan Weimin, Minister of the State Administration of Sports and president of the games' organizing committee, praised the people of the southern Chinese province of Guangdong for their painstaking and unremitting efforts for successfully staging of a well organized games.

The Chinese sports chief called on nationwide efforts to further implement the "Sports for All" National Fitness Program and the "All for Olympic Glory" Program for greater sporting achievements in major international events including the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and the 2008 Games in Beijing.

After Yuan's speech, the flag of the national games was lowered and the games' flame at the Guangdong Olympic Stadium in northern Guangzhou went out.

The games' flag was relayed from Guangdong governor Lu Ruihua to Yuan, and then to Ji Yunshi, governor of East China's Jiangsu Province, host of 10th National Games in 2005. The ceremony also featured song and dance performances named " Beyond the Dream".



The finals of the Ninth National Games that took place in the 15 cities across Guangdong, with Guangzhou as the center, witnessed 8,608 competitors, nearly 1,000 more than the previous national games. Plus coaches, judges, officials and journalists attending the event, the participants in the current national games totaled more than 20,000.

The 9th National Games saw 24 athletes surpassing 7 world records, mostly in weightlifting. It also witnessed six athletes and one team upsetting six Asian records and 28 athletes surpassing 9 Asian records. Meanwhile, a total of 37 national records were renewed. The host Guangdong delegation was placed first in the medal tally with 69.5 golds, followed by Liaoning with 41 golds and the Chinese Army with 33 golds.
