Seven people who attempted to smuggle over 40 Chinese into Japan have been sentenced to jail terms of between two and 15 years in Fuzhou, capital of Fujian Province in east China.

Wang Biwu, Lin Yongqi and five others were also fined from 10,000 to 30,000 yuan each for the smuggling attempt which occurred in early May.

The sentence delivered by the Fuzhou intermediate people's court is believed to be the toughest punishment ever given in the province to human being smugglers.

According to the court, Wang Biwu and his accomplices had attempted to smuggle more than 60 people into Japan via Dalian port in northeast China at a cost of 110,000 to 160,000 yuan per person. Their attempt was foiled by Fuzhou border police, leading to the arrest of the smugglers as well as over 40 stowaways.
