Russia has submitted a preliminary bid to host the 2008 European Championship, UEFA announced on Friday.

Earlier in the week, Russian Football Union (RFU) chief Alexander Tukmanov said they had given up on the idea of hosting the European championships because they had not received government guarantees.

Russia was not on the list of six initial bidders that UEFA announced on Tuesday. Those candidates are Austria/Switzerland, Bosnia/Croatia, Denmark/Finland/Norway/Sweden, Greece/Turkey, Hungary and Scotland. But European soccer's governing body made a separate announcement on Friday to say Russia had now joined the list.

Bidders must confirm their applications by February of next year, and UEFA will make the final decision in December 2002.
