France and Germany called for a "transitional administration" in Afghanistan Friday as quickly as possible before the establishment of a government of national reconciliation.

A joint statement issued by senior officials of the two countries following their meeting in Nantes, western France, said, "Our objective is the formation in Afghanistan, as quickly as possible, of a transitional administration, then the establishment of a legitimate, representative, multi-ethnic government that is determined to embrace human rights."

"We share much hope for the United Nations conference that is to open in Bonn under the authority of Mr. Lakhdar Brahimi, special representative of UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, to whom we reaffirm our full support," it added.

France and Germany also called on Afghan leaders to show responsibility for the future of their country, said the document.

French President Jacques Chirac, Prime Minister Lionel Jospin and German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder as well as a dozen ministers from the two countries attended the 78th French-German summit in Nantes.
