More than 500,000 packages of confiscated fake foreign cigarettes were set to fire Thursday in Huidong County, Guangdong Province in south China.
The cigarettes had been seized by the Shenzhen customs authority since July this year, customs officials said.
So far this year, the Intellectual Property Bureau of the Shenzhen customs has seized one billion yuan worth of fake or pirated products, including one million packages of fake cigarettes.
The move Thursday marks a clear indication of the customs' determination to enforce intellectual property rights laws on the eve of China's accession to the World Trade Organization, the officials said.
