Chinese President Expresses Condolences Over Death of Malaysian Head of State

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Wednesday sent a telegram to express his condolences over the death of Malaysia's 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme Head of State) Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who died of heart failure Wednesday morning.

Chinese President Jiang Zemin on Wednesday sent a telegram to express his condolences over the death of Malaysia's 11th Yang di-Pertuan Agong (Supreme Head of State) Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah, who died of heart failure Wednesday morning.

"On behalf of the Chinese people and in my name, I express my deep condolences over the death of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah," Jiang said in the telegram.

Jiang also expressed his sympathy with Sultan's family and the Malaysian people.

Sultan, aged 75, breathed his last at 11:57 a.m. after having been in critical condition for five days and put on life-support and dialysis machines.

The Malaysian government announced seven days of mourning beginning Wednesday and ordered national flags to be flown half-mast following Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad's announcement of the Sultan's death over Radio Television Malaysia Wednesday afternoon.
