Chinese Premier Holds Talks with Moldovan Prime Minister
Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji held talks with Moldavian Prime Minister Vasile Tarlev Tuesday afternoon in the Great Hall of the People. The two sides had an in-depth exchange of views and reached wide consensus on bilateral relations and other issues of common concern in a warm and friendly atmosphere.

Furhter Cooperation
Zhu said China is willing to make joint efforts with Moldova to push for further development of trade and economic co-operation based on the principles of equality and reciprocity.

Zhu suggested the two countries should encourage direct contact between their enterprises and companies, saying China and Moldova -- both being members of the World Trade Organization -- have great potential in multi-field co-operation.

In order to promote bilateral economic and trade cooperation, Zhu hoped the two sides will work in the following fields.

  • I Give full play to the role of the mixed Sino-Moldavian economic and trade committee. It is hoped that the two sides will make conscientious preparations for the second meeting to be held in Beijing next year and come up with more ideas for bilateral economic cooperation and trade.

  • II Encourage and support enterprises and companies of both countries to contact each other directly to increase understanding and promote cooperation. During the current visit, the entrepreneurs accompanying Prime Minister Tarlev will hold business meetings with their counterparts in Beijing and other places. It is hoped that they can achieve concrete results.

  • III Strengthen promotion and increase the popularity of both countries' products in each other's market. The China Council of Promotion of International Trade will hold an exhibition of Chinese products in Moldova next year. China encourages Moldavian enterprises to host and participate in exhibitions in China.

  • IV Explore the possibilities of cooperation under multilateral economic frameworks. Both China and Moldova are members of the WTO. The two sides can conduct more active cooperation in the WTO and other multilateral trade frameworks.

  • Consistent Supports for Moldovan Government
Zhu said that he highly appreciated the smooth development of bilateral relations since China and Moldova established diplomaticrelations in January 1992.

He noted that during Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to Moldova in July, the two countries had signed a joint statement and set the guideline and principles for the development of bilateral relations in the future.

Chinese Premier expressed the wish that the governments of the two countries would follow the principles of the joint statement and carry out the consensus of their respective state leaders.

He said that China is ready to maintain high-level contacts, and expand exchanges and cooperation with Moldova in various fields.

He reiterated China's consistent support for the efforts the Moldovan government has made to safeguard national independence and integrity of its sovereignty and land. China hopes that the issue of the left bank of the Dniester River will be resolved through peaceful means at the earliest possible date.

He said that he hoped that Moldova would realize its unificationas soon as possible.

    'One China' Principle
Tarlev said President Jiang Zemin's visit to Moldova has helpedpromote the bilateral relations to a new level. He highly praised the friendly cooperation between the two countries on the international stage, and their joint efforts to combat separatism and power politics.

Tarlev reiterated the Moldovan government's stance of "one China" on the Taiwan issue. He also invited Premier Zhu to visit Moldova at a convenient time.

Following the talks, Zhu and Tarlev attended the signing ceremony of documents on bilateral cooperation concerning viticulture and wine production, and on cooperation between the ministries of justice of the two countries.

    Sino-Moldova Relations
The People's Republic of China and the Republic of Moldova established diplomatic relations on January 30, 1992. In June of the same year, China opened its Embassy in Moldova, and in March 1996, Moldova set up its Embassy in China. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the bilateral political relations have been in smooth progress.

In November1992, Moldova President Mircea Snegur visited China at the invitation of President Yang Shangkun, and the two countries signed a joint statement and other eleven documents concerning the bilateral relations. In the joint statement, both sides indicated that they will develop their relations in accordance with the UN Charter and on the basis of the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence. The Government of Moldova recognizes that the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory. Moldova affirms that it will not establish any official ties with Taiwan. China supports Moldova's efforts in consolidating its independence and state sovereignty.
