Some 200 well-known makes of cars were exhibited Monday in north China's municipality of Tianjin, which is also the port with the laregest number of car imports in China.

As the first auto show to be held since China's accession into the World Trade Organization, the 2001 Tianjin International Car Exhibition chose "More Open Chinese Car Market and the 21st Chinese Car Import Customs" as its theme.

Over 150 of the cars exhibited at the 7-day show are renowned brands such as BMW, Opel, Toyota, Ford and Mitsubishi.

Li Shenglin, Mayor of Tianjin, said here today that China's WTO entry marks a new era in the country's opening-up. The car market will face new challenges.

Near half of the country's car imports enter China via Tianjin, which handled imports of 17,000 cars in the first ten months of this year.
