With a sole gold medal on offer for China's famed Liaoning provincial women's running team to vie for on the third day of the track and field competitions, Dong Yanmei was the one that lived up to her coach Ma Junren's expectation at China's ninth national games Monday.

Dong from northeast China's Liaoning Province, defending champion of the women's 10,000 meters, clocked 31 minutes and 43.59 seconds to win the day's final athletics event.

Sun Yingjie from the Railways Sports Association finished second, 5.88 seconds behind the 22-year-old winner. Dong overtook Sun when there were one and a half laps left for the race.

Dong's teammate Liu Min, winner of the earlier women's marathon title at this year's national games, was third in 31:53.78.

Monday morning saw three athletes, all from Liaoning, surpass the Asian best time in women's 20 kilometers walk.

Wan Yan, runner-up at the 1999 world championships, clocked one hour 26 minutes and 22 seconds for the title. Olympic champion Wang Liping was second in 1:26:23 and 1999 world champion Liu Hongyu was third in 1:26:35. The official Asian best time of 1:27:30 had been held by China's Liu Hongyu since May of 1995.

Defending champion Li Zewen from Yunnan Province retained the men's 20 kilometers walk title in 1:20.49. Li finished fourth in the 1999 world championships.

Liu Xiang from Shanghai, 18, took the men's 110 meters hurdles event in 13.36 seconds, 11 hundredths of a second behind the national and Asian records.

Sun Wenli from north China's Shandong Province won the men's 3,000m steeplechase in 8:36.25, far short of the national record of 8:10.46.

Shanghai's Wu Yun and Wang Zhouzhou won the men's pole vault and high jump events, in 5.30 and 2.24 meters respectively. Gu Ying of hosts Guangdong Province took the women's long jump title with a leap of 6.57 meters. And Li Rongxiang of east China's Zhejiang Province won the men's javelin with a throw of 81.15 meters.
