Three male swimmers broke the national record in men's 1,500-meter freestyle on the last day of the swimming competition at China's Ninth National Games Monday in Guangzhou.

Yu Cheng, newly-crowend winner and national record holder of the 400m freestyle, stormed in 15 minutes 15.95 seconds, edging local favorite Zheng Shibin at the touch pad in 15:16.22 and teammate Wu Peng in 15:18.65.

The previous national mark was 15:29.39 set by Zheng Shibin in South-East Asian Games last May.

The 18-year-old Yu said: "I'm ready to win this champion as I have won the 400m freestyle. I believe my sprint finish will help me to beat Zheng."

Xu Yanwei of Shanghai celebrated victory in women's 50m freestyle in 25.02, beating veteran Shan Ying and Le Ying of the Chinese Army into second and third in 25.51 and 25.60.

Liaoning sealed title in women's 4x100m medley relay in 4:04.79 and Guangdong won the men's 4x100m medley relay in 3:43.70.

Host team Guangdong topped the medal tally with nine golds, five silvers and three bronzes while long-time powerhouse Shanghai came to second for 6-6-3 and the army third with 5-4-8.

The eight-day swimming competition have witnessed six world's-best, three second and three third on the year's rankings.

Chen Yan, world champion and former world record holder in women's 400m individual medley, snatched two world top spots in 200m and 400m medley, Zhang Liang in women's 200m and 400m freestyle, world champion Luo Xuejuan in women's 100m breaststroke and the army in 4x200m freestyle relay.

Three Asian records and twelve national records were also upset during the swimming competitions at the quadrennial national games.
