The first Xiuzhou China Peasants Painting Festival opened Sunday in the Xiuzhou district of Jiaxing City in east China's Zhejiang Province.

The festival has attracted over 3,000 visitors from home and abroad. The peasants of Xiuzhou started painting in 1983, and the group grew from only a few people to over 100. They have produced over 1,200 pieces of works, covering various aspects of rural life.

Xiuzhou was awarded the title of "China Xiuzhou Peasants Painting Center" by the Ministry of Culture in 1988.

The eight-day event will show 500 works by peasants from 23 provinces, autonomous regions and municipalities all over China.

The festival is being co-sponsored by the Zhejiang Provincial Culture Bureau, Jiaxing City Government and Xiuzhou District.
