Luo Nan Shines in Women's 200m Breaststroke at China's National Games

Luo Nan from northeast China's Liaoning Province took the limelight at China's national games swimming pool where she upset big names including world record holder and world champion in the women's 200 meters breaststroke here on Saturday.

Luo Nan from northeast China's Liaoning Province took the limelight at China's national games swimming pool where she upset big names including world record holder and world champion in the women's 200 meters breaststroke here on Saturday.

Luo, silver medalist in the earlier 100m breaststroke event here, led throughout the race in a time of two minutes 24.76 seconds, edging world record holder Qi Hui from the Chinese Army by four hundredths of a second.

World champion in 50m and 100m Luo Xuejuan came third in 2:28. 04.

Luo Nan, 15, said: "I didn't think of winning the gold before the games. It is a surprise to me."

However, her coach Han Bingyan was not satisfied with Luo's performance. "She should have swum faster." But he predicted a good prospect for his pupil. "With a height of 1.78 meters and effective strokes, she will break the world record, sooner or later," he said.

Shanghai's Xu Yanwei took the women's 100m freestyle in 54.40 seconds, beating Yang Yu of Zhejiang, 200m silver-medalist in this year's world championships, and veteran Shan Ying of the Chinese Army, former freestyle relay world champion, into second and third places, in 54.94 and 55.26 respectively.

Yu Rui of Guangxi celebrated his victory in the men's 200m backstroke in 1:59.76, which is a world's 10th fastest and a national best this year, followed by Shandong's Fu Yong in 2:00.55 and Chen Cheng of Guangdong in 2:02.37.

Jin Hao of Shandong opened his golden account at the games, form a gold in the men's 200m individual medley in 2:01.87. Local favorite Xie Xufeng was runner-up in 2:02.40.
