The Shanghai women's relay team broke the Asian record in 4x200 meters freestyle relay event with a world's best time this year at China's Ninth National Games Friday in Guangzhou.

The quartet, consisting 200m freestyle bronze medalist Pang Jiaying and three other finalists of the earlier event, stormed home in seven minutes 56.52 seconds, breaking the previous Asian mark of 7:57.96 set by a Chinese team. Zhejiang came second in 7:59.90 and Chinese Army third in 8:01.32.

Shanghai's head coach Cheng Zhi said: "This is the world fastest time of year. If they could swim 0.3 second faster in their respective leg, they would have broken the the world record."

Liu Yin of Shandong Province chalked a hard-won victory in the women's 200m butterfly, touching home in 2:08.66. She edged veteran Chen Yan, who had already won the 400m and 200m individualmedley titles here, by 0.01 second.

Cui Li from the Chinese Army had to settle for a bronze medal in 2:08.75. The 17-year-old Liu said: "I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw the results board. I'd beaten Chen Yan for the title." Liu had competed in last year's Sydney Olympic Games but was eliminated in the heats. "The loss in Sydney encouraged me to grow and train harder than ever before," she said.

Chen Zuo claimed first gold for Beijing as he won the men's 100m freestyle in 50.92 seconds and Cheng Hao of the Chinese Army took the men's 200m breaststroke gold in 2:17.17.
