China to Help Cuba Recover from Hurricane Aftermath

China will help Cuba overcome the damage of the devastating hurricane Michelle that hit the island a week ago, Mei Zhaorong, President of the Foreign Affairs Institute of China, said Thursday in Havana.

China will help Cuba overcome the damage of the devastating hurricane Michelle that hit the island a week ago, Mei Zhaorong, President of the Foreign Affairs Institute of China, said Thursday in Havana.

Mei, who arrived here Wednesday for a five-day visit, said he admired the courage shown by the Cuban people in facing the aftermath of hurricane Michelle which left five people dead and caused great economic losses.

The passing of the hurricane through the island coincided with the official visit of China's top legislator Li Peng. Li announced that the Chinese government would donate 604,000 U.S. dollars to the Cuban government to help with relief efforts.

Mei met Thursday with Cuban Vice Foreign Minister Jose Guerra and was to meet other Cuban officials.
