"Rattling noises" were heard before the American Airlines flight 587 crashed in New York, U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) member George Black said Tuesday.
A review of the voice recorder recovered from Monday's crash site shows that an airframe rattling noise was heard more than one minute after the A-300 Airbus jet took off from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, he told a press conference.
The recording also indicated that "several comments" in the cockpit were made later, suggesting loss of control of the plane, he said.
The plane, carrying 251 passengers and nine crew members, was headed for San Domingo, Dominican Republic soon after takeoff at about 9:15 am local time. At least 262 people were killed, authorities said. The crash occurred at a residential area in Queens Borough of the city.
Investors were focusing on a "catastrophic engine event" as the likely cause of the incident.
