WTO approves Chinese Taipei's membership

In line with the principle confirmed in the statement of the chairman of the council of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade, November 11 saw China's Taiwan being approved by WTO's Ministerial Conference to join the WTO in the name of Taipei, Penghu, Jinmen and Mazu'' or "China's Taipei'' for short following the Chinese mainland's entry into WTO. This will create new opportunities for cross-Straits economic development and cooperation.

Chinese spokespersons delivered speeches on Taiwan's WTO entry

On the same day, Gao Yan, spokeswoman of the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation and Zhang Mingqing, spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office under the State Council delivered speeches on Taiwan's WTO entry. Following is the full text of the speech.

We welcome Chinese Taipei's entering into the WTO in the name of China's Taipeifollowing the Chinese mainland's entry into it. We consider that Chinese Taipei's WTO entry will benefit not only the economic development of the island, but also the cross-Straits economic and trade development, and basic interests of people in Taiwan as well. However, it is necessary to point out that after both sides of the Straits become WTO members, the trade relations across the Straits will still maintain the relationship between China's main body with its independent tariff area. And the trade relations across the Straits can be developed only under the principle of one-China. We hope that the Taiwan authorities agree to the one-China principle as soon as possible and take effective measures for an early realization of the three-links, thus promoting the economic and trade development between the two sides.
