An emergency medicine system (EMS), which is both accessible and affordable to all in need, should be well developed in China, experts agreed at an international symposium held recently here.

Statistics show that 146 cities have set up emergency treatment centers, covering 44 percent of the nation's 335 cities.

However, most centers lack sufficient funds and advance facilities with only a few in big cities as exceptions, said Zhao Yongchun, an expert with Beijing Emergency Treatment Center.

The Italian government recently offered advanced emergency treatment and transportation facilities as well as personnel training to emergency centers in Beijing, Chongqing, the Tibet Autonomous Region, Shanxi, Guizhou and Heilongjiang Province.

Chinese experts said they want to learn more advanced emergency treatment skills to ease the pain of patients suffering cardiovascular diseases, trauma and poisoning, which are three categories that EMS usually deals with.
