U.S. President George W. Bush on Monday expressed "heartbroken sympathy" and condolences to those who suffered from the crashing of American Airlines Flight 587 jetliner earlier in the day.

Bush delivered the condolences during a brief meeting with the press at the Rose Garden together with visiting former South African President Nelson Mandela.

Mandela, for his part, also expressed his condolences to victims of the incident and his support to the ongoing U.S.-led military strikes against Afghanistan.

Flight 587, an Airbus A-300 jetliner, crashed in the Rockaway Beach section of New York's Queens district minutes after its takeoff from the John F. Kennedy International Airport. There are 246 passengers and nine crew members aboard.

New York authorities said that 161 bodies have been recovered and six still missing on the ground. Another dozens of people on the ground suffered minor injuries.

The U.S. government has said that so far there is no indication of any terrorist involvement in the tragedy.
