Investigations said Monday that the passenger plane that crashed on Monday morning lost all or part of an engine in flight, which suggests it might have been caused by an accident.

Marion C. Blakey, head of the national Transportation Safety Board, said in Washington that preliminary evidence pointed strongly toward mechanical failure rather than terrorist attack.

Speculation is rampant in New York that the fresh air disaster might be the work of another terrorist scheme, as Osama bin Laden has threatened at least twice to launch further attacks on the U.S. since the latter began military strikes in Afghanistan on October 7.

New York is on the edge of the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attack, which toppled the twin towers of the World Trade Center, killing some 5,000 people. With this in thought, the plane crash earlier Monday fueled strong speculation of terrorist assault.

There were no known survivors from the jetliner crash. The plane carried 246 passengers and nine crew when it in Rockway, a small district just south of the John F. Kennedy International airport.

The plane crashed soon after taking off from the Kennedy International Airport and heading for the Dominican Republic.
