Chinese Defense Minister Chi Haotian said Monday that promoting the traditional friendship between China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will benefit regional development, world peace and stability.

Chi, also vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission and a state councilor, made the remark at a meeting with a delegation from the Korean People's Army of the DPRK.

Chi said the traditional friendship between the two countries has withstood the test of time and shown a strong vitality amid the drastic changes in the international situation over the past few decades.

The friendship has been furthered in the first year of the new century, he said, citing General Secretary Kim Jong Il's two visits to China in May last year and January this year respectively and Chinese President Jiang Zemin's visit to the DPRK in September this year.

The two leaders agreed to make joint efforts to raise the friendship and cooperation to a new high, he added.

Chief briefed the visitors on China's views on the international situation and the Korean Peninsula issue, and said that strengthening bilateral cooperation is conducive to regional development and world stability.

Kim Song Un, deputy army commander of the Korean People's Army and head of the delegation, agreed with Chi and said that in the new century the DPRK people and armed forces will continue to strengthen cooperation with the Chinese side to further develop the bilateral relations.
